If I Were a Fish is a site-specific sound installation created for the “ Open Tuin Jordaan” event, in the center of Amsterdam in June 2024. It consists of a series of underwater field recordings of the canals next to the installation sites. Visitors are encouraged to listen to human activity from a different perspective, and are challenged through a series of questions to dwell into an acoustic environment which is decontextualized both in space and in time. Listening from a non-anthropocentric perspective is the center of the installation. It also deals with the issue of how a remembered sound can influence the listening of what we experience in the present.
